In the fitness world, it is often said that someone does not need to become better than others, but should become a better version of themselves. There is something powerful about that idea. It encourages discipline, progress, and responsibility. At the same time, it also raises a deeper question: how far should that improvement continue? When does growth serve health, function, and quality of life, and when does it turn into an endless pursuit of more muscle mass, more food, and more appearance?

The core question is not only how someone becomes better, but also why that growth takes place and whether that growth still truly adds something to life.

The power of self-improvement

The desire to become better is not wrong in itself. Goals provide direction, progress creates motivation, and resistance training can make a person physically and mentally stronger. Research in motivational psychology shows that people function better when behavior is connected to perceived purpose, autonomy, and personal growth. Regular resistance training is also associated with benefits for health, quality of life, mental resilience, and a lower risk of several chronic diseases.

When growth becomes an end in itself

Still, not every form of growth is automatically healthy. The pursuit of improvement can go too far. In sport psychology, a distinction is made between harmonious passion and obsessive passion. Harmonious involvement supports well-being and balance. Obsessive involvement makes a person dependent on performance, appearance, or control. In that case, progress is no longer a means to live better, but a goal without an endpoint. Satisfaction then moves further and further out of reach.

From admiration to a different perspective

For many boys, the appeal of bodybuilding does not begin with a moral question, but with admiration. The great names in the sport make a strong impression. Ronnie Coleman was a clear example of that for many years. His size, strength, and presence made bodybuilding look powerful and impressive. At a young age, that can create the feeling that this is the highest physical ideal. But later, a different perspective often develops. Once it becomes clear what top-level bodybuilding actually involves β€” exceptional genetics, extreme eating, enormous costs, a life fully centered around physical appearance, and in many cases performance-enhancing drug use β€” that admiration can turn into doubt.

Once the physical price of top-level extremity becomes visible, the way extreme muscle mass is viewed also begins to change. That does not automatically mean every bodybuilder will face the same outcome, but it does show that extreme physical development at the highest level raises not only admiration, but also serious questions about health, sustainability, and the true value of that extreme growth.

What once inspired admiration can later turn into the question of whether maximum growth is still proportionate to health, costs, quality of life, and sustainability.

Bodybuilding and the risk of obsession

That boundary becomes especially visible in bodybuilding, because it is not only about health or strength, but often about maximum muscle mass, extremely low body fat levels, and physical perfection. Reviews and clinical literature describe that competitive bodybuilding can be associated with increased risks of muscle dysmorphia, obsessive behavior around food and training, social limitations, and disturbed body image. That does not mean every bodybuilder is unhealthy, but it does mean the sport can be an environment where discipline and compulsion are very close to each other.

The role of competition and comparison

Even when someone says they are only competing with themselves, comparison still often plays a role. Social media, fitness culture, and physical ideals quietly influence what is seen as better. Becoming a better version of yourself sounds healthy, but in practice it can still be shaped by other people's bodies, by stage standards, and by the idea that more is always better. Because of that, the focus can shift from health and function to appearance, status, and recognition.

When extra muscle mass adds very little

Up to a certain point, building muscle clearly contributes to health, resilience, and quality of life. More muscle mass can support strength, metabolism, independence, and protection against physical decline. But that added value is not endless. At a certain point, extra muscle mass becomes mainly relevant for a niche purpose, such as high-level bodybuilding, and much less for daily functioning. When muscle mass is mainly useful on a stage, the meaning of that growth changes.

The moral question behind extreme bulking

This also creates a moral question. Eating well to become strong, fit, and energetic is easy to defend. But structurally consuming extreme amounts purely to become even bigger feels different. Not because one athlete literally takes food away from someone else, but because morality is also about proportion, intention, and balance. When large amounts of food, time, money, and attention are mainly used to keep building a body without broader function, it becomes reasonable to ask what that growth is really for.

Drug use and health damage

The moral tension becomes even stronger when the pursuit of muscle mass is combined with performance-enhancing drug use, such as anabolic-androgenic steroids. The literature describes risks involving cardiovascular damage, hormonal disruption, psychiatric problems, and other health complications. These substances also tend to reinforce a culture in which extreme growth becomes more important than health or sustainability. At that point, it is no longer about a healthy lifestyle that supports life, but about a form of physical specialization in which health itself comes under pressure.

The boundary between development and emptiness

The core question is therefore not whether ambition is wrong. Ambition, discipline, and drive can build a person up. The real question is whether growth still serves something beyond itself. When training helps someone live healthier, think more clearly, function better, and be more valuable to others, that growth has clear meaning. When growth instead revolves mainly around appearance, comparison, control, and the feeling that it is never enough, that same drive can turn into emptiness.

Becoming stronger is valuable. But once life starts serving the body instead of the other way around, it is time to reconsider the purpose of that growth.

Conclusion

So becoming bigger is not automatically better. Becoming stronger, fitter, and more developed are valuable goals, as long as those goals remain connected to health, balance, and meaning. The boundary becomes visible when life starts serving the body instead of the other way around. Real strength is not only found in continuing to grow, but also in understanding why that growth is taking place and when it still truly adds something to life.
