We live in a time in which everything keeps developing. Technology moves forward. AI is taking over more and more tasks. Things are becoming easier, faster, and more efficient. And in a way, that is remarkable. The fact that I can sit here and talk to AI, like ChatGPT, and that it responds as if you are talking to someone… that is actually bizarre when you think about it. But at the same time, another question comes up. Are we really becoming better because of this?
Everything is becoming easier. But what happens to people when comfort becomes greater than direction?
Everything is becoming easier, but what happens to people?
More and more work is being taken over. Machines do it. AI does it. Tasks that used to be done by people are slowly disappearing. On the one hand, that is appealing: less heavy work, more efficiency, and reaching your goals faster. But on the other hand, another question appears. What is left for people? Especially for those who are not necessarily thinkers, but more practically oriented. People who get fulfillment from doing, from working, from striving toward something. When that disappears, something else disappears too: structure, responsibility, and purpose in your day. And maybe even more importantly: a sense of usefulness.
Freedom sounds good, but it does not work for everyone
You could say: then we give everyone freedom. Or a basic income. But freedom without direction is not always a good thing. Not everyone can guide themselves. Not everyone can handle complete freedom. Some people need structure, rules, a rhythm. Work used to provide that automatically. If that disappears, you have to create it yourself. And not everyone succeeds at that.
People are not only rational
We often think of human beings as rational creatures. But that is only half the story. People also have impulses, ego, and drives. Not everyone can control those equally well. Some people can guide themselves and have discipline. But others follow their impulses more easily and have less control. And that is where the problem lies. If everyone is completely free, but not everyone can control themselves, chaos arises.
We seem smart, yet little really changes
You would think: humanity develops, becomes smarter, so things should get better. But look at the world. There is still war. There is still conflict. Only the tools become more advanced. That shows something important: technological progress does not automatically mean human progress.
Technology can progress while people inwardly remain much the same.
Two directions
The world is moving toward more comfort. And because of that, two kinds of people begin to stand out. People who guide themselves, build discipline, create structure, and use technology as a tool. And people who lose direction, become distracted, lose their rhythm, and become passive. The gap grows. Not necessarily between more intelligent and less intelligent people, but between living consciously and living unconsciously.
What makes us human?
Maybe it is not work itself. But what work gave us: something to strive for, effort, responsibility, and the feeling of progress. Without that, life becomes empty. Human beings need something to move toward. Something to improve in.
I notice that in myself too. I have also had days where you simply do not know what to do. You have freedom… but then what? Freedom without direction makes you unsure where to go. You can do everything, and precisely because of that, you end up doing nothing.
But when you have something to work toward, everything changes. It gives drive. It drives me too. For example, building this website. Growing PowerVita. Those are things I am working toward. And that gives direction.
Why this matters for you
We live in a time in which everything becomes easier. But that does not mean you should live more easily too. On the contrary: this is exactly why it becomes more important to train yourself. Not only physically, but mentally as well. Discipline. Structure. Control over yourself. That does not appear automatically. You have to build it. That is exactly why themes such as discipline, responsibility, and direction in life are not separate ideas, but a foundation.
Final thought
The world does not automatically become better or worse. But the difference between people grows. The question is not what technology is going to do. The question is: what are you going to do with the freedom you receive?
The future is not only about technology, but about the extent to which you can continue to guide yourself.
